Spanish Cod and Shrimp Skillet | Packed with Flavors & EASY to Make
This Spanish cod and shrimp skillet, known as cazuela de bacalao y gambas, is what Mediterranean food is all about. We’re talking layers of flavors, simple everyday ingredients, and all done in a little over 30 minutes using just one pan. Serve it next to a baguette and a bottle of Spanish wine for a fabulous meal.

To make this recipe, I used cod fillets I bought frozen and thawed out. You can also use fresh cod here, as well as any other type of firm white fish. As for the shrimp, I used red Argentinian shrimp I also bought frozen and thawed and already peeled and deveined. However, you can use any shrimp you like here.

I topped off the skillet with a very typical garlic sauce from Spain. Made with just garlic, parsley, olive oil, and lemon juice. I used a mortar and pestle to make it. But you can also use a food processor, stand up blender, or even a nutribullet.

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: It took me between 5 to 6 minutes to fully cook the cod and shrimp. It might take you less or more. Just keep an eye on the seafood so it doesn’t overcook. You can store this dish in the fridge for up to 2 to 3 days in an air-tight container.

Spanish Cod and Shrimp Skillet | Cazuela de Bacalao y Gambas
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 45 ml
- 2 medium yellow onions (thinly sliced)
- 4 cloves garlic (roughly chopped)
- 1/2 tbsp all purpose flour 4 grams
- 1/2 cup dry white wine 120 ml
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme 0.50 grams
- 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper 0.65 grams
- 1 cup fish broth 240 ml
- 4 cod fillets 7 oz / 200 grams each
- 1 lbs raw shrimp (peeled & deveined) 450 grams
- sea salt & black pepper
FOR THE GARLIC SAUCE
- 2 cloves garlic (roughly chopped)
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley 5 grams
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 30 ml
- 1 tsp lemon juice 5 ml
- sea salt
EXTRAS
- lemon wedges for garnish
Instructions
-
Heat a large fry pan with a medium heat and add in the olive oil
-
After a couple of minutes, add in the sliced onions, mix together, and then mix every 1 to 2 minutes so they evenly sauté
-
In the meantime, add the cod fillets over some paper towels and pat completely dry, then season with salt & pepper on both sides; do the same thing with the shrimp, but just season on one side
-
After sautéing the onions for about 10 minutes and they're translucent, add in the chopped garlic and mix continuously, after 1 minute, add in the flour and mix continuously for 1 minute, then add in the white wine, dried thyme, and crushed red pepper, and continue to mix together
-
Once the alcohol has been cooked off in the wine, about 3 minutes, add in the fish broth, gently mix continuously, and go for 4 to 5 minutes or until you get a slightly creamy sauce, then season with salt & pepper, and mix together
-
Add the cod fillets into the pan, all in a single layer, and then gently flip each one, then add the shrimp, once again all in a single layer, then place a lid on the pan, and lower to a low medium heat, simmer for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the cod and shrimp are just cooked through
-
In the meantime, make the garlic sauce, add the chopped garlic, chopped parsley, and a pinch of salt into a mortar, and using a pestle, pound down on the ingredients until you get a paste-like texture, then add in the olive oil and lemon juice, and mix together
-
Once the cod and shrimp are just cooked through, remove the pan from heat, top off the cod fillets with the garlic sauce, and garnish with lemon wedges, serve at once, enjoy!
