A History in Spanish Tapas

– Spanish Tapas Recipes –

Spain is famously known for their love of tapas, if you have visited Spain before, you know what I´m talking about. Tapas are essentially little appetizers that you can munch on before a meal or you can even grab a couple of them for a complete meal. The most popular Spanish tapas recipes are Patatas Bravas, Fried Calamari, Sauteed Garlic Mushrooms and croquettes, among many others. Tapas represent big flavors in a small bite, and are enjoyed with a cold beer or glass of wine, such as a young Rioja or a white Albariño, but in parts such a Cantabria, cider is the drink of choice.

So Why Are They Called Tapas?

Legend says that the word tapas comes from the south of Spain, where people used to cover (cover translates to ¨tapar¨ in Spanish) a glass of red wine (or sherry) with a piece of bread to prevent flies from going into their wine glass during the summer months. Of course, that piece of bread would be eaten, with either a piece of jamon Iberico or a piece of queso Manchego on top. Eventually tapas evolved to what they are today in modern Spain.
