Crispy Grilled Cheese Sandwiches | Addictively Delicious & Easy to Make

These Crispy Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are the next-level in grilled cheese goodness. We´re talking a crispy exterior, with beautifully melted cheese in the inside and all done using the simplest ingredients.

Crispy Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
To make these grilled cheese sandwiches, I used regular white sandwich bread. But you can also use whole wheat, rye bread or even gluten free. As for the cheese, I used havarti cheese and cheddar. But you can use any cheese you like. Just make sure it easily melts.

Crispy Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
I like to serve these crispy grilled cheese sandwiches next to a very simple tomato sauce. Which really elevates the flavors of the sandwiches. The secret ingredient? Garlic Infused Olive Oil. As it gives the tomato sauce an incredible depth of flavors.

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: Make sure to fry the sandwiches in batches, to not overcrowd the pan. I used sunflower oil to fry the sandwiches, but you can use any type of neutral oil, such as canola oil.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sunflower oil 120 ml
  • 4 slices white sandwich bread
  • 4 slices havarti cheese
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter 28 grams
  • 1/2 cup low fat milk 120 ml
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup bread crumbs 150 grams
  • 1 tsp dried oregano 1 gram
  • pinch sea salt

FOR THE TOMATO SAUCE

  • 1/2 cup canned tomato sauce 125 grams
  • 1 tbsp canned tomato paste 20 grams
  • 1 tbsp garlic infused olive oil 15 ml
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano .5 grams
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil .5 grams
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme .25 grams
  • 3/4 tsp onion powder 1.5 grams
  • pinch sea salt
  • dash black pepper

Instructions

FOR THE TOMATO SAUCE

  1. Add the canned tomato sauce, tomato paste, garlic infused olive oil, dried oregano, dried basil, dried thyme and onion powder into a bowl, season with a kiss of sea salt & black pepper and whisk together until well mixed, set aside

FOR THE CRISPY GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES

  1. Spread the butter over the 4 sandwich slices, add 2 slices havarti cheese over 2 slices of bread (butter side) and 1 slice of cheddar cheese, add the other slice of bread butter side down over the cheese, gently push down on the sandwich to compact it together, then cut into 4 evenly sized pieces

  2. Dip each piece of sandwich into the milk, then into the egg wash (2 eggs whisked together) and finally into the bread crumbs, seasoned with dried oregano and sea salt, making sure it´s evenly coated all around

  3. Heat a large fry pan with a medium heat and add in 1/2 cup sunflower oil

  4. Once the oil gets hot, add the coated slices of sandwich into the pan, all in a single layer and evenly spaced out (cook in 2 batches), after 1 1/2 minutes flip to fry the other side, after another 1 1/2 minutes remove from the pan and transfer over a wire rack, cook the next batch in the same method

  5. Transfer the tomato sauce into a serving dish and decorate the crispy grilled cheese sandwiches around the sauce, serve at once, enjoy!

I was surprised by this recipe as I make something similar. I make French toast by dipping day-old bread in whisked eggs and milk, then frying it. After one piece is made, I top it with cheese. I add the next French toast on top. A friend from Panama also adds a slice of ham.
