Got Canned Sardines? Make these Fried Sardines with Spicy Garlic Sauce

These Spanish-style fried sardines with spicy garlic sauce are what simple and delicious food is all about. We’re talking easy to make, a ton of great flavors, and all done in about 15 minutes. Serve them as a tapas appetizer or even as a main course, next to some roasted potatoes and a garden salad.

Fried Sardines with Spicy Garlic Sauce

To make this recipe, I used Spanish canned sardines in olive oil. You can use any type of canned sardines you like. However, the higher the quality, the better the overall flavors. I also used the olive oil from the canned sardines to fry them. If you prefer, you can just use regular olive oil.

Fried Sardines with Spicy Garlic Sauce

For the spicy garlic sauce, I used a combination of garlic, crushed red pepper, sweet smoked Spanish paprika, and lemon juice. You can double down on the crushed red pepper if you want the sauce extra spicy.

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: Remember to be extra gentle with the sardines; otherwise, they can easily break apart. This dish can be stored in the fridge for 2 to 3 days in an airtight container.

  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour 60 grams
  • 6 cloves garlic (thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper 0.65 grams
  • 1/2 tsp sweet smoked Spanish paprika 1.25 grams
  • 2 tsp lemon juice 10 ml
  • sea salt & black pepper
  • chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Gently drain the cans of sardines into a fine sieve with a bowl underneath

  2. Heat a fry pan with a medium heat and add in the drained olive oil from the canned sardines

  3. Add the flour into a shallow bowl, and gently coat each sardine all around

  4. Once the oil is hot in the pan, add in the coated sardines, all in a single layer, and fry for 2 minutes per side, then gently remove from the pan and set aside

  5. Using the same pan with the same heat, add in the sliced garlic and crushed red pepper, mix continuously, after 1 to 2 minutes and the garlic is lightly browned, turn off the heat, add in the paprika, lemon juice, and season with salt & pepper, mix together

  6. Transfer the sardines into a serving dish, all in a single layer, top off with the spicy garlic sauce and chopped parsley, serve at once, enjoy!
