A Typical Breakfast In Spain | Traditional Spanish Breakfast Recipe
This Traditional Spanish Breakfast Recipe is possibly the best way to start your day. It´s filled with honest & clean flavors, it´s super healthy for you and it´s all done within minutes.
You will find this exact breakfast served all over Spanish coffee shops, tapas bars and hotels throughout the country. It´s fast, easy on the stomach and promises to give you the energy to tackle on the day in front of you.
To make this recipe I freshly squeezed the orange juice. Just like they do in Spain. Of course you can skip this step and use the store-bought stuff. But by freshly squeezing it, is what gives this breakfast that lift of goodness.
TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: I used a baguette for the toast. You can use other types of bread. Just make sure it´s a firm bread. That way once you add the tomato mixture it does not get soggy.

Traditional Spanish Breakfast Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Spanish ground coffee 20 grams
- 1 cup low fat milk 240 ml
- 4 large oranges
- 3 tomatoes
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 30 ml
- 1 clove garlic
- 1/2 baguette
- pinch sea salt
- fresh parsley
Instructions
-
Make the coffee as you would normally (I used a manual espresso maker)
-
Add the milk into a sauce pan and heat with a medium heat
-
Cut the oranges in half and juice the oranges (I used a manual juicer)
-
Cut the baguette into 5 inch (12 cm) pieces and then in half lengthwise, add to the toaster and lightly toast
-
Finely grate the tomatoes into a bowl, add in 1 tbsp (15 ml) extra virgin olive oil and season with sea salt, mix together
-
Once the slices of baguette are toasted, rub them all over with a clove of garlic, then top off with the grated tomato and drizzle them with extra virgin olive oil
-
Once the coffee is done transfer into coffee mugs, top off with the hot milk, serve at once, enjoy!

Pan con tomate was my absolute favorite meal or snack when I was in Spain! Sometimes it came with my vino order, especially in Madrid. I add a bit of sherry vinegar to mine! Its so dreamy and yummy 🤤!

30 . Mar . 2023Hi Albert – excellent recipe. I came across this breakfast in Catalunya but didn’t realise it was so popular across Spain. What would I ask for? Pan tostado con ajo y tomate is a bit longwinded – what would a local order in say Andalucia?

Frequently eat this type of breakfast but prefer my coffee black and strong with some sugar. As for the sandwich I use what in PR we call pan de agua, butter the bread after toasting, add tomatoes slices, top with chopped parsley or even cilantro. Yummm no cle it was typical Spanish breakfast

24 . Mar . 2023This is one of my favorite foods from my Spanish travels. The Spanish tomatoes, toast, olive oil are to-die-for. I think maybe at peak of our tomato season might come closest to replication of the flavors of Spain but certainly not quite the same. So simple yet really such an incredible taste treat!
