Canned Sardines in Spicy Tomato Sauce | Quick & EASY 20 Minute Recipe
These Canned Sardines in Spicy Tomato Sauce, known as Sardinas en Conserva en Salsa Picante, are packed with flavors, made with basic pantry staples and all done in about 20 minutes. Serve them as a tapas appetizer or even as a main course next to some roasted potatoes.
To make this recipe, I used Spanish canned sardines in olive oil. I used the olive oil from the canned sardines to make the spicy tomato sauce. If you’re using canned sardines in water, just use regular olive oil to make the sauce.
For the sauce, I used canned tomato sauce. Which is very similar to passata. You can also finely grate fresh tomatoes if you like. About 6 medium-sized tomatoes will do. I just prefer canned tomato sauce to make this dish, as the acidity from the canned tomatoes vs. the sweetness from the fresh ones complements the sardines.
TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: You can serve this dish warm, at room temperature or even chilled. It will hold for up to 3 to 4 days in the fridge in an airtight container.

Spanish Canned Sardines in Spicy Tomato Sauce | Sardinas en Conserva en Salsa Picante
Ingredients
- 2 cans sardines in olive oil 4 oz / 120 grams each
- 1 small onion
- 4 cloves garlic
- 1 tsp hot smoked Spanish paprika 2.50 grams
- 1/2 tsp sweet smoked Spanish paprika 1.25 grams
- 1/2 cup dry white wine 120 ml
- 1 can tomato sauce (passata) 15 oz / 425 grams
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley 8 grams
- sea salt & black pepper
- lemon and parsley for garnish
Instructions
-
Gently drain the cans of sardines into a fine sieve with a bowl underneath, shake off any excess oil
*remember to be gentle, otherwise the sardines can easily break apart
-
Heat a large fry pan with a medium heat and add in 3 tbsp (45 ml) of the reserved olive oil from the canned sardines
-
In the mentime, finely chop the onion and roughly chop the garlic
-
Add the chopped onion and garlic into the hot fry pan, mix continuously, after 3 to 4 minutes and the onion is translucent, add in the hot smoked paprika and sweet smoked paprika, quickly mix together, then add in the white wine, mix and then let it simmer
-
After 2 to 3 minutes and the alcohol has been cooked off in the wine, add in the canned tomato sauce, chopped parsley and season with sea salt & black pepper, mix together, then gently add in the canned sardines, all in a single layer and evenly spaced out, lower to a low-medium heat and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, then remove from the heat
-
You can serve this directly out of the pan or transfer into serving dishes, garnished with lemon wedges and chopped parsley, enjoy!
