Tuna Tomato Sandwich | Possibly the BEST Tuna Sandwich EVER

This Tuna Tomato Sandwich is possibly the best tuna sandwich ever. We’re talking a ton of great flavors, easy to make and all done in about 20 minutes. Serve it next to a handful of chips and a couple cold beers for the best moment of your day.

Tuna Tomato Sandwich
To make this recipe, I used Spanish canned tuna in olive oil. You can use other types of tuna if you like. However, the higher the quality of the tuna, the better the overall flavor of this sandwich. I also used the olive oil from the tuna to make the tuna-tomato mixture. If you use tuna in water, just use regular olive oil.

Tuna Tomato Sandwich

For the bread, I used multigrain sandwich bread. You can use whatever type of bread you want here. The most important thing is to make sure you lightly toast it. This way, once you add the tuna tomato mixture, the bread won’t mush and break apart.

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: You can serve this sandwich warm, at room temperature or even chilled. The tuna tomato mixture will hold for up to 3 to 4 days in the fridge in an airtight container.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans tuna in olive oil 4 oz / 110 grams each
  • 1 small onion
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 green bell pepper
  • 1/2 tsp sweet smoked Spanish paprika 1.25 grams
  • 1 cup canned tomato sauce (passata) 240 grams
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley 8 grams
  • sea salt & black pepper
  • 4 slices multigrain sandwich bread

Instructions

  1. Drain the cans of tuna into a fine sieve with a bowl underneath and gently flake the tuna

  2. Heat a fry pan with a medium heat and add in 3 tbsp (45 ml) of the reserved olive oil from the canned tuna

  3. In the meantime, finely chop the onion, roughly chop the garlic and finely chop the green bell pepper

  4. Add the chopped ingredients into the hot fry pan, mix continuously, after 3 to 4 minutes and the onion is translucent, add in the paprika, quickly mix together, then add in the tomato sauce, parsley and season with sea salt & black pepper, mix together and then simmer

  5. After 4 to 5 minutes and the tomato sauce has slightly thickened, turn off the heat, add in the drained tuna and mix together until well mixed

  6. Lightly toast the slices of sandwich bread

  7. Add the tuna tomato mixture over the slices of toast, top off with another slice of toast, serve warm, at room temperature or even chilled, enjoy!

I would butter the bread on the outside and then cook gently on a pan until soft and browned (how Americans make toasted sandwiches). I prefer this method rather than toast.
