The Famous SARDINE SANDWICH from Spain | Bocadillo de Sardinas
This Spanish sardine sandwich, known as “bocadillo de sardinas,” is what Mediterranean food is all about. We’re talking a ton of great flavors, simple everyday ingredients, and done in a little over 10 minutes. Serve it next to some marinated olives and a couple of ice-cold beers for the best moment in your day.

To make this sandwich, I used Spanish canned sardines in olive oil. You can use any type of canned sardines you like. But I tell you, make sure to use the good stuff here, as it makes all the difference in this sandwich.

As for the vegetables, I sautéed onions, green bell peppers, and garlic in the olive oil from the canned sardines. You can use any type of vegetables you like, though these are the most common. You can even add in a little crushed red pepper for a spicy kick.

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: I used a baguette to make these sandwiches. Which is what’s typically used in Spain. You can use any bread you like. Just make sure it has a hard shell, and if not, lightly toast it. That way it doesn’t fall apart.

Instructions
-
Gently drain the cans of sardines into a fine sieve with a bowl underneath
-
Heat a large fry pan with a medium heat and add in the drained olive oil from the canned sardines

After a couple of minutes, add in the sliced onion, sliced green bell pepper, and sliced garlic, mix together, then mix every 1 to 2 minutes so everything evenly sautés

In the meantime, add the mayonnaise into a bowl, along with the Dijon mustard, grated garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil, then season with salt & pepper and whisk together
-
After sautéing the vegetables for 7 to 8 minutes and they're lightly sautéed, season with salt & pepper, mix together, and then turn off the heat
-
Cut the baguette into 3-inch (8 cm) pieces (this is about the typical length of a canned sardine), then cut each piece in half lengthwise
